INDONESIA, RAKYAT NEWS- Gunung Merapi or the volcanic Merapi, located on the border between Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta, has exhibited increased volcanic activity in recent days. On the night of July 15, 2023, the volcano released pyroclastic surges 12 times, with the longest reaching up to 1,800 meters. This activity continued, and on Saturday night, July 20, 2024, Merapi emitted another series of pyroclastic flows, with the furthest reaching up to 1,200 meters.

Earlier on July 20, between 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM, Merapi also discharged three lava flows towards the southwest, reaching the Bebeng River.

“At 7:46 PM on July 20, 2024, a pyroclastic flow occurred with a maximum amplitude of 35 mm, lasting 119 seconds, and traveling 1,200 meters towards the Bebeng River with the wind direction towards the southwest,” stated the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) in their official release.

Hazard Warnings and Safety Recommendations

BPPTKG warns that the current hazards include lava flows and pyroclastic surges in the southern and southwestern sectors, affecting the Boyong River up to 5 kilometers and the Bedog, Krasak, and Bebeng rivers up to 7 kilometers.

“The public is advised to avoid the recommended danger zones,” BPPTKG urged.

In the southeastern sector, the Woro River is hazardous up to 3 kilometers and the Gendol River up to 5 kilometers. During explosive eruptions, volcanic material could be projected within a 3-kilometer radius from the summit.

“Ongoing magma supply indicated by monitoring data can trigger further pyroclastic flows within these hazard zones,” BPPTKG added.
