JAKARTA, RAKYAT NEWS- PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has announced its readiness to enter the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) market, responding to the rising global demand for this environmentally friendly energy source.

Arief Sukmara, Director of Gas, Petrochemical & New Business at PIS, highlighted a significant increase in LNG demand worldwide, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. “We anticipate a need for an additional 193 gas carriers to meet the projected 5% annual growth in LNG demand, which is expected to rise from 412 million tons per annum (mtpa) in 2023 to 666 mtpa by 2033. This indicates a requirement for 27 to 28 new LNG carriers each year over the next decade,” Arief explained in Jakarta.

LNG is recognized for its lower emissions compared to other energy sources and plays a crucial role in the global energy transition. In response, PIS is preparing to enter the LNG market with new LNG carriers, leveraging its maritime logistics expertise and international presence to contribute to the supply of cleaner energy.

“With a commitment to being a global leader and an estimated revenue of up to USD 6 billion by 2030, we are keen to support the provision of clean LNG energy in the Asia-Pacific region,” Arief added.

To ensure national energy security, PIS is continuously expanding its fleet and infrastructure. The company currently operates seven very large gas carriers (VLGCs) equipped with dual-fuel technology, which is more environmentally friendly. PIS’s fleet operates across more than 60 international routes.

Founded in 2016, PIS is a subsidiary of PT Pertamina (Persero) and was designated as the parent company of the Subholding Integrated Marine Logistics (SH IML) in 2021. This role encompasses all shipping, maritime services, and logistics operations. (Uki Ruknuddin)
